One of the many novelties presented by IWC Schaffhausen at the latest editionof Watches and Wonders, held in Geneva, was the Ingenieur Tourbillon 41.

This new flagship addition to the Ingenieur line combines an 18‑carat 5N gold case and bracelet with an olive‑green “Grid” dial. Its centrepiece is the flying minute tourbillon positioned at 6 o’clock, completing a full rotation every sixty seconds. The watch stands out as an elegant, high‑end sports model, elevated by meticulous finishing techniques such as satin brushing and polished accents. Through the sapphire‑glass case back, the in‑house calibre 82905 can be admired, equipped with a Pellaton winding system that uses ceramic components.

With this release, IWC revisits Gérald Genta’s bold 1970s design language, enhancing it with improved ergonomics and refined detailing. Since the debut of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 in 2023, the brand has steadily expanded the collection with new dimensions, materials, and complications—including the signature crown‑operated perpetual calendar by Kurt Klaus. The latest model introduces one of haute horlogerie’s most celebrated complications: the tourbillon.

Limited to just 100 pieces, the Ingenieur Tourbillon 41 (Ref. IW345901) features a 41.6 mm case and integrated bracelet in 18‑carat 5N gold. The bezel, crown guards, and crown share the same precious metal. The five functional screws securing the bezel are crafted from 18‑carat Armor Gold®, known for its significantly increased hardness compared to standard gold alloys.

The dial showcases the Ingenieur’s iconic “Grid” structure, adding depth and texture, while its deep olive tone contrasts beautifully with the gold elements. Gold‑plated hands and solid‑gold appliques—each applied by hand—complete the aesthetic. The watch’s finishing is particularly elaborate, with satin‑brushed surfaces complemented by polished edges that highlight the sculptural lines of Genta’s original design.

The tourbillon houses the balance wheel and escapement within a lightweight cage that rotates once per minute, helping counteract gravitational effects on the regulating system and improving precision. The flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock is supported by gold‑coated bridges, creating a striking visual display. Composed of 56 tiny components and weighing only 0.635 grams, the mechanism is among the most demanding complications to assemble. An integrated stop function allows the tourbillon to halt completely, enabling precise, to‑the‑second time setting. The pallet lever and escape wheel feature Diamond Shell® coating, which reduces friction and optimises energy transmission.

Inside the watch is the IWC‑manufactured calibre 82905. Its efficient Pellaton winding system uses bidirectional rotor movement to build an 80‑hour power reserve. High‑stress components are made from virtually wear‑free zirconium oxide ceramic, including the automatic wheel and clicks in black ceramic, and a white‑ceramic rotor bearing. The movement is richly decorated: the rotor and automatic bridge are gold‑plated and finished with Geneva stripes, while the oscillating mass includes a solid‑gold “Probus Scafusia” medallion—symbolising IWC’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
