Roger Dubuis Marks 30 Years of Innovation and Horological Artistry
Blending bold individuality with deep-rooted horological mastery, Roger Dubuis has carved its own path in watchmaking since 1995. With the audacious concept of Hyper Horology™, the Maison has redefined the contours of haute horlogerie—infusing it with a spirit of thrill, freedom, and deliberate rebellion.
At the core of its operations lies a fully integrated Geneva-based manufacture, where every movement is crafted in-house to exacting standards. This dedication to excellence is embodied in the prestigious Poinçon de Genève certification, a hallmark earned through both traditional expertise and fearless innovation.
Each creation is a modern reinterpretation of ancestral craftsmanship—where daring design meets technical brilliance. With this unrelenting creativity and a passion for unconventional materials, Roger Dubuis continues to push boundaries, curating its visionary timepieces for an elite community of connoisseurs and avant-garde collectors.
A Vision Forged in Geneva
The story begins with two pioneers: master watchmaker Roger Dubuis and designer Carlos Dias, who shared a vision to build a manufacture that married the traditional codes of Genevan watchmaking with dramatic expressivity. That vision still drives the brand today. Roger Dubuis’ fascination with timekeeping ignited in childhood, inspired by the clocktower of his local village. By age 15, he was enrolled in formal watchmaking studies, earning his student number, 208—later immortalized in his diploma watch, certified by the prestigious Poinçon de Genève. Throughout his career, Dubuis was both a guardian of tradition and a trailblazer, devoted to restoring antique timepieces while simultaneously crafting expressive new ones. His dual commitment to heritage and innovation laid the foundation for what would become the brand’s signature philosophy.
Engineering the Exceptional
From its early years, Roger Dubuis made waves with its command of complex mechanisms. Between 1995 and 2006, the company developed a repertoire of complications, from perpetual calendars to minute repeaters and tourbillons—often combining multiple complications within a single calibre.
A standout example emerged in 2009: the Excalibur Grande Complication. It housed an in-house movement blending a flying monotourbillon, minute repeater, and inline perpetual calendar—all finished to Poinçon de Genève standards.
Among complications, the tourbillon emerged as a hallmark, appreciated not just for its precision but its compactness—offering more creative space for design. This spirit of experimentation led to breakthrough concepts like the Excalibur Quatuor in 2013, which replaced the tourbillon with four inclined balance wheels to counteract gravitational forces.
Bold Forms and Signature Style
Design has always been a stage for Roger Dubuis’ expressivity. Unconventional forms and flamboyant dials distinguished its collections from the outset. The late 1990s saw the release of the Sympathie—a timepiece that paired a cushion-square case with a retrograde perpetual calendar, a complication co-patented by Dubuis and Jean-Marc Wiederrecht. That unique display would become a recurring motif across the Maison’s decade anniversaries.
The 2000s brought other stylistic statements, from the double-dial Too Much to the Golden Square, which introduced the brand’s first in-house tourbillon in 2003. Then came the Excalibur in 2005—a defining collection with its dramatic triple-lug case and wide, open dial that encouraged creative skeletonization. The Excalibur Double Tourbillon added baroque flair and mother-of-pearl detailing, reflecting the brand’s growing confidence in storytelling through design.
Emotions, Legends, and High-Speed Dreams
The Maison has also embraced mythology and motorsport to channel emotion into horology. Beginning in 2013, it launched the Knights of the Round Table series, combining fantasy and fine micro-engraving. By 2017, Roger Dubuis had entered the fast lane, forging partnerships with Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Pirelli Design. These collaborations translated high-octane inspiration into the world of watchmaking—from tire rubber straps to bold composite cases.
Looking Ahead
At Watches and Wonders 2025, Roger Dubuis unveiled two commemorative timepieces that fuse legacy and vision. The Excalibur Grande Complication, limited to eight pieces, revives the brand’s passion for complications with signature flair. Meanwhile, the Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar pays homage to the Maison’s favorite display with timeless materials and refined proportions.
As it celebrates 30 years, Roger Dubuis remains resolutely focused on what lies ahead: reshaping the future of watchmaking—one expressive masterpiece at a time.
