Since Henri d’Origny created the Arceau in 1978, its asymmetrical stirrup‑inspired lugs and understated round case have served as a stage for Hermès’ most expressive dial techniques. In the Cheval Natté, that stage is transformed by designer Tong Ren’s geometric horse motif, originally conceived for home accessories and now reinterpreted through a dial composed of nearly 400 individually placed silk threads. Each thread is laid by hand in a precise direction, creating a relief effect that shifts with the light and gives the horse’s head a sense of movement. Silk becomes marquetry, colour becomes architecture, and the dial behaves like a miniature woven tapestry suspended beneath sapphire crystal.

Diamonds heighten the interplay of materials. A total of 123 stones are set directly into champlevé‑engraved recesses on the dial, their crystalline geometry contrasting with the organic softness of the silk threads. The 38 mm rose‑gold case continues this jewelled vocabulary with 70 diamonds on the bezel and a single diamond set into the crown. Beneath the anti‑glare sapphire crystal and sapphire case‑back, the Manufacture Hermès H1912 automatic movement reveals the Maison’s mechanical signature.

Crafted in Switzerland, the calibre measures 23.9 mm in diameter and 3.9 mm in thickness, operates at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), and offers a 50‑hour power reserve. Its bridges are decorated with the Hermès “sprinkling of Hs” pattern, a finishing detail reserved for the brand’s manufacture movements and visible through the transparent case‑back. The watch displays hours and minutes with gold‑plated hands, maintaining a clean, essential presentation that allows the dial’s artistry to dominate.

Two interpretations of the Cheval Natté are offered, each limited to 24 pieces. One embraces the vivid hues of Tong Ren’s original design, producing a luminous, multicolour composition. The other adopts a more intense palette of black, red and brown tones, giving the horse’s head a dramatic, graphic presence. Both versions are paired with either dune or black matte alligator straps crafted in the Hermès workshops and secured with a rose‑gold pin buckle. Water resistance is rated at 3 bar, appropriate for a collector’s piece whose purpose is aesthetic expression rather than sport.
