Roger Dubuis unveils the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph, a Geneva Seal–certified wristwatch that marries haute horology with motorsport spirit. Its fully integrated movement houses both a vertical clutch and a column wheel, honoring traditional chronograph craftsmanship while delivering razor-sharp performance.

The Maison’s inventive spirit shines through three signature innovations: a patent-pending 120° Rotating Minute Counter, the Second Braking System built into the vertical clutch, and a cryptodate display. Together, they redefine how a chronograph measures—and dramatizes—elapsed time.

Beneath a multi-layered, skeletonized dial inspired by Roger Dubuis’s openwork mastery, each gear and bridge is artfully revealed. The result is a dynamic stage where depth and dimension converge in expressive harmony.

Chronographs have long been associated with motor racing’s precision demands, yet Roger Dubuis approaches the complication from a distinctly high-horology stance. Founded in 1995 by a master watchmaker whose first creations were chronographs, the Manufacture has evolved its fifth-generation calibre—RD780—into a complete, in-house engine for both timekeeping and split-second measurement.

Within the RD780, the column wheel at 6 o’clock not only orchestrates start, stop, and reset with fluidity, it’s also intricately milled from stainless steel and polished with a high-shine zinc finish usually reserved for complex shapes. The vertical clutch, akin to an automotive gearbox mechanism, ensures the chronograph seconds hand engages without hesitation.

At 3 o’clock, the anisotoxal-shaped Rotating Minute Counter pivots gracefully, its oversized red numerals gliding past the 0–9 scale for instant legibility. Opposite, a balance wheel tilted at 12° mirrors a tourbillon’s inertia while diamond-coated silicon escapement components deliver anti-magnetic resilience and lasting precision.

Encased in a 45 mm skeletonized 18 K pink-gold case with matching pushers and secured by a Quick Release black rubber strap, the watch presents a warm-toned contrast that heightens its technical character. Turn it over and a five-spoke rotor—modeled on a supercar wheel rim and framed by Roger Dubuis’s signature sharp lines—reveals the rhythmic heart of the movement.

Limited to 88 pieces—a nod to the founder’s lucky number—and featuring a matching tachymeter scale, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph offers 72 hours of power reserve. To earn its Poinçon de Genève, all 333 components undergo 16 distinct finishing techniques, striking a balance between athletic energy and high-horology excellence.

Designed for those who live life in the fast lane yet refuse to compromise on refinement, this timepiece encapsulates Roger Dubuis’s Hyper Horology philosophy: radical creativity, ancestral craftsmanship, and an uncompromising vision for the future of fine watchmaking.
