ZENITH UNVEILS THE CHRONOMASTER REVIVAL A384 TROPICAL
Before 1969, owning a chronograph meant committing to a daily habit: manually winding the movement. Everything changed with a breakthrough that reshaped the entire category. With the debut of the El Primero calibre, ZENITH introduced the world’s first automatic, integrated, high‑frequency chronograph — a landmark achievement in watchmaking. Among the earliest models, the A384 distinguished itself with its striking tonneau‑shaped case and forward‑thinking design.
Today, ZENITH brings this emblem back to life through the CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical, a modern reinterpretation of one of its most iconic references, viewed through the passage of time. Inspired by naturally aged “tropical” dials — whose warm brown hues develop after decades of sunlight exposure — this edition channels the charm of rare vintage examples, paired with ZENITH’s signature high‑frequency precision.
“Tropical” dials describe vintage watch faces whose original colours have gradually shifted into deep brown shades, typically due to long‑term ultraviolet exposure and the slow oxidation of dial materials. Though unintentional, this transformation occurred unpredictably, giving each dial a unique character — a trait that collectors now prize. Rather than copying a single historical piece, the design translates the essence of aged dials into a refined, cohesive aesthetic, capturing their depth and warmth with contemporary precision.
The dial features a white lacquered base accented by brown sub-dials in a classic “chocolate panda” layout. This balanced colour scheme extends to the tachymeter scale, presented in matching tones. Faceted applied markers and hands are treated with “old radium” Super‑LumiNova, recalling the gentle patina of time while maintaining excellent readability. A bright red chronograph seconds hand adds a lively, modern touch.
The CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 mirrors the proportions and construction of the 1969 original. Its compact 37 mm stainless steel case — recreated directly from vintage blueprints — preserves the sharp tonneau silhouette, pump pushers, and the distinctive mix of brushed and polished finishes characteristic of the era. With 5 ATM water resistance, it blends historical authenticity with contemporary durability.
Inside is the El Primero 400 calibre, the closest descendant of the original El Primero 3019 PHC from 1969. Fully developed and produced in-house, it beats at 5 Hz (36,000 vph), allowing timing to 1/10th of a second. With a 50‑hour power reserve and 278 components, the movement is visible through the sapphire case back, where the openworked rotor bears the ZENITH five‑pointed star. Honouring the original model, the watch is paired with the iconic “ladder” bracelet, first created for ZENITH by Gay Frères in 1969. Lightweight, flexible, and instantly recognisable, it reinforces the Revival line’s authenticity while offering modern comfort.
The CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical is available at all ZENITH boutiques, both online and in-store, as well as through authorized retailers worldwide.
