Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds: A Study in Restraint and Refinement
The 2025 Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds is entirely crafted from 18-carat pink gold and features a Milanese link bracelet that transforms this dress watch icon into something unexpected. The result occupies a peculiar position: vintage glamour delivered through contemporary execution; sporty origins expressed through a jewellery-like presence.
The Dial: Golden Grain Against Polished Metal
The dial is a masterclass in surface treatment. Executed in a golden hue matching the surrounding case, it receives character through multiple stamping operations that create a finely-grained texture. This matte finish provides an essential counterpoint to the high polish found elsewhere, ensuring legibility against an otherwise monochromatic composition.
Applied indexes mark the hours, their elongated shape and faceted profile adding visual depth while catching light at varying angles. The faceted treatment echoes the Dauphine hands, creating deliberate visual dialogue between elements. At six o’clock, the circular small seconds subdial introduces welcome geometry, breaking the rigid Art Deco lines with a touch of classical watchmaking tradition. Every element demonstrates considered restraint: nothing demands attention for its own sake.
The Movement: Calibre 822
The hand-wound Calibre 822 is an increasingly rare example of a movement designed specifically to fit its case. Comprising 108 components that operate at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, it provides a 42-hour power reserve. At just 2.93mm thick, this calibre proves crucial in achieving the slim 7.56mm profile of this timepiece.
The tonneau-shaped architecture follows Jaeger-LeCoultre’s philosophy whereby movement shape corresponds to case shape. Every component was designed, produced, and assembled entirely within the Manufacture. The decoration follows classical Geneva conventions: bridges receive Côtes de Genève in parallel bands, and edges are bevelled with hand-finished anglage. The replacement of the traditional Triovis regulator with a free-sprung inertia balance represents a significant technical evolution, allowing a finer rate adjustment and improved long-term stability.
The Case: Fifty Components of Considered Engineering
The Reverso case comprises over 50 components, approximately 40 of them serving the slide-and-swivel mechanism alone. This mechanism, derived from René-Alfred Chauvot’s 1931 patent, allows the watch capsule to rotate 180 degrees within its cradle.
Measuring 45.6mm x 27.4mm with a 7.56mm thickness, the case is crafted entirely from 18-carat pink gold. The signature horizontal gadroons adorning the top and bottom trace directly back to the 1931 design, drawing inspiration from Art Deco architecture. These decorative grooves define the Reverso’s identity as surely as the reversing mechanism itself.
The Milanese link bracelet transforms this Reverso entirely. Crafted from 16 metres of pink gold thread, the construction employs a dense, flat metal weave to create a double layer of small interlocking links. This fabric-like structure, known as ‘pezza’, provides exceptional flexibility while maintaining structural integrity. The absence of pins ensures durability and that characteristic smooth, sinuous feel on the wrist.

The lug attachment has been modified to make the bracelet appear seamlessly integrated with the case, eliminating the visual gaps that sometimes afflict metal bracelets on rectangular cases. An integrated sliding clasp allows for precise fit adjustment, while the polished buckle complements the spectacular surface of the links.
Final Thoughts
The Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds occupies a niche few watches can successfully claim. It is simultaneously vintage and contemporary – a jewellery piece tracing its lineage to sport, and a rectangular dress watch that drapes around the wrist with fabric-like suppleness.
What impresses most is the absence of compromise. The matte grain of the dial is offset by the polished case. The slim Calibre 822 enables the thin profile, while the modified lugs allow for seamless integration of the bracelet. The Reverso has housed 79 different calibres across nine decades. This version returns to the essentials: three hands, a seconds subdial, and exceptional materials finished with evident care.
Having spent a considerable amount of time with this watch, I find it has firmly established itself as one of my favourites from last year. The tactile pleasure of the Milanese bracelet, the warmth of pink gold catching the afternoon light, and the satisfying click of the swivelling mechanism – these experiences distinguish fine watchmaking from ordinary timekeeping. Jaeger-LeCoultre has delivered something genuinely special: an icon renewed without unnecessary revision, a classic allowed to remain true to itself.
