For a second year, Chopard is proud to announce that it is the “Official Timekeeper” of the 29th Annual California Mille.

Drawing upon the original Italian open road race from Brescia to Rome that ran from 1927 to 1957, the California Mille is a 1,000 mile, four-day excursion through the picturesque back roads and time-capsule towns of northern California.

This year, the event features over 70 classic cars manufactured before 1958.  On April 28, 2019, the public was invited to a free car show at the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco, before the drivers embarked on their journey.  Lorenzo Ortuna, Italian Consul General, waved the flag of Italy at 8:15 a.m. on April 29, 2019 to signify the official start of the California Mille. After touring the northern part of the state, the Mille will culminate in the wine country, ending on May 2nd, in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, home to three of the top wineries in the United States.

The close ties between Swiss timepiece and jewelry Maison, Chopard, and the Mille Miglia stem from a now-inseparable shared history. The initial connection was born from a personal passion for classic cars nurtured by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard Co-President. Under his leadership, Chopard became the main sponsor of the Mille Miglia in 1988 and one of the first Maisons to associate its name with the automobile world.

For Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the links are entirely natural: “Lovers of fine cars often have a great weakness for precious timepieces and vice versa.  Extreme precision and sporting elegance are important in both these fields.”

The Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph California Mille Edition

Chopard developed the Mille Miglia Chronograph collection as a way to represent elegance and high performance needed in both the watch and classic car race industries.  To commemorate the 2019 California Mille tour, Chopard has designed a limited edition watch based on the Mille Miglia Chrono Classic, limited to 29 pieces in honor of the 29th California Mille.

This model is forged from a blend of passion, style and precision. The stainless steel case and the humming beat of the COSC-certified high-precision movement evoke the beautiful curves and roaring engines of classic cars. The dial mimics vintage car bodies and the certified chronometer expresses a perfect pairing of automobile design and mechanical watchmaking. For this edition, Chopard pays tribute to the California Mille and the epic scenery that surrounds it. Incorporating elements of the state flag, the watch features the symbolic California grizzly bear on the case back, a red stripe on the dial and green tachymeter representing the state colors. Last but not least, the dial also features the California Mille logo.
