Blancpain unveils the Fifty Fathoms Tech
The new Fifty Fathoms Tech introduces Blancpain’s three‑hour bezel, a complication shaped by the realities of deep, prolonged exploration, allowing divers to remain submerged for hours as the underwater world slowly unveils its mysteries. While June 8 invites global attention to the Ocean, Blancpain has lived that commitment daily for more than twenty years, carrying forward a legacy that began in 1953 when the Fifty Fathoms emerged as the first true diver’s tool watch.
That same pioneering spirit fuels the modern Fifty Fathoms Tech and anchors the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, a program that has grown into one of the most influential forces in marine research and preservation. Blancpain’s secured rotating bezel has never been ornamental; it has always been a life‑saving instrument, enabling divers to track elapsed time and surface safely. After seven decades of operating in 60‑minute increments, it evolved in 2023 with the patented three‑hour bezel of the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa 70th Anniversary Act 2, created by Marc A. Hayek and Laurent Ballesta to meet the demands of extended CCR dives.

By reengineering the movement and adapting the GMT mechanism to a three‑hour rotation, Blancpain introduced a dedicated hand and scale that offer the precision required by technical divers, photographers and scientists working at depth. This same instinct to innovate guided the earliest steps of the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, beginning when Marc A. Hayek gathered leading underwater photographers in Thailand in 2003 and launched, with PADI, a citizen‑science initiative for whale shark identification.
That approach — empowering the diving community, supporting meaningful projects and building long‑term partnerships — has defined the BOC ever since. The name arrived in 2014, but the philosophy behind it has remained constant: Blancpain does more than fund exploration; it cultivates it, ensuring that each endeavor contributes tangible scientific and ecological progress.
