Baselworld: Ticking in Tune with the Times
From its humble beginnings with a handful of Swiss watchmakers showcasing their innovations at a national fair in Basel to its heyday with thousands of international exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the globe, in a magnificent bespoke hall by world-renowned architects, Baselworld is a story of a show with a history of reinventing itself to reflect the needs of the market. The one constant that has remained unchanged is the fact that Baselworld is universally acknowledged as the one unmissable show for the world’s watch and jewellery community.
Baselworld now stands on the threshold of entering a new phase in its evolution. Primary mover and shaker entrusted with this monumental task, is Michel Loris-Melikoff, visionary Managing Director of the show. With his proven track-record in trendy event management, Michel has, within a short space of time, already put an inspiring new ‘friendlier’ face on Baselworld, and has implemented preliminary changes designed to transform a traditional trade fair into an experience platform with building a Baselworld community being a priority. Active listening to the needs and wishes of all stakeholders is key, and the upshot of these discussions resulted in some changes being put in place in 2019, with lots more to come in 2020 and beyond.
The next edition will already see coordination of show dates with the SIHH, a new space called “Community District” in the heart of Hall 1, Gems and Stones upgraded to a more central location and the launch of a centralised E-concierge service that will simplify and reduce costs for all attendees. “The pipeline is full of exciting new plans,” says Michel Loris-Melikoff, adding that “we are leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of delivering a spectacular show that is not only in tune with the times, but in harmony with the needs of our community.”
