Swiss watchmaker Alpina is extending its presence far beyond the waters of the Atlantic. The brand has announced a major partnership with Virtual Regatta, the world’s leading online sailing simulator, bringing its role as Official Timekeeper of the iconic transatlantic race into an immersive digital environment that attracts hundreds of thousands of sailing enthusiasts worldwide.

The collaboration marks a significant evolution in how watchmaking brands engage with modern audiences, blending competitive sailing, gaming and precision timekeeping into a shared experience that spans both physical and virtual worlds.

A New Digital Chapter for the Route du Rhum

The Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe, set to depart from Saint-Malo on 1 November 2026, remains one of the most demanding and prestigious solo offshore races in sailing. For the first time, Alpina’s partnership with Virtual Regatta will allow the brand to accompany participants not only on the ocean but also across a vast digital racecourse followed by players around the globe.

The initiative begins with the launch of the “Warm-up by Alpina”, a dedicated virtual prologue designed to build anticipation for the main event. Registration opens on 11 September 2026, with the race itself taking place between 23 September and 1 October. While conceived as a preparatory challenge, the prologue introduces a distinctly Alpina twist by integrating the brand directly into gameplay.

Rather than serving as a traditional sponsor backdrop, Alpina becomes part of the strategic challenge. Competitors aboard Ocean Fifty multihulls in Alpina colours will navigate a course of approximately 1,000 nautical miles around Saint-Malo and the Bay of Biscay. At the centre of the route lies a giant virtual rendering of the Alpina logo, transformed into a tactical obstacle. Sailors can choose to pass through the logo to shorten their route, but doing so imposes a substantial speed reduction, creating a risk-reward calculation that adds a unique layer of decision-making.

The result is a gaming mechanic that mirrors many of the choices faced by real offshore sailors, where the shortest path is not always the fastest.

The Virtual Atlantic Crossing Begins

The partnership reaches its most visible moment on 1 November 2026 when the virtual Route du Rhum starts simultaneously with the real race from Saint-Malo at 1:02 p.m. Players from around the world will guide their digital vessels across the Atlantic using the same weather data and routing challenges encountered by professional skippers competing at sea.

Virtual Regatta has long established itself as a benchmark within online sailing simulation. Each year, more than one million players from 190 countries participate in its events, recreating prestigious offshore races from computers and mobile devices. By replicating real meteorological conditions and race routes, the platform offers a remarkably faithful interpretation of modern ocean racing.

The 2026 edition also carries symbolic significance for Virtual Regatta itself. The platform celebrates its twentieth anniversary during the same year, having originally launched during the 2006 Route du Rhum. Two decades later, the stories of the race and the simulation platform converge once more around the common themes of performance, timing and strategic excellence.

Bringing Alpina into the Heart of Gameplay

Throughout the virtual competition, Alpina’s presence will be deeply integrated into the experience. Participants across all five race categories, Ultime, IMOCA, Ocean Fifty, Class40 and Vintage Multi, will have access to exclusive Alpina-branded boat skins, ensuring the watchmaker remains visible throughout every stage of the Atlantic crossing.

This approach reflects a broader trend among luxury brands seeking authentic ways to connect with younger, digitally engaged communities. Rather than relying solely on sponsorship visibility, Alpina becomes part of the race ecosystem itself, creating interactions that players actively engage with during competition.

For a brand whose identity has long been linked to adventure, endurance and outdoor performance, the partnership represents a natural extension of its sporting heritage into contemporary digital culture.

Timepieces as Trophies

Among the most distinctive aspects of the collaboration is the prize structure. Six examples of the Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre Route du Rhum Edition will be awarded during the virtual event.

Instead of rewarding only podium finishers, Alpina has introduced a more original approach. Five watches, one for each race category, will be presented to the competitors finishing in 1,883rd place, a direct reference to the year the manufacture was founded. A sixth timepiece will be awarded through a random draw among all finishers who selected the Alpina skin, creating opportunities for participants far beyond the front ranks of the leaderboard.

The strategy reinforces the spirit of inclusivity that has helped make Virtual Regatta one of the world’s most popular sailing simulations, where participation and engagement are often as important as outright victory.

The Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre Route du Rhum Edition

The watch selected as the event’s flagship prize also highlights Alpina’s growing commitment to solar-powered technology.

Introduced as part of the brand’s expanding solar collection, the Alpiner Extreme Solarmetre Route du Rhum Edition combines practical sustainability with the robust design language of the Alpiner Extreme range. Hidden beneath its translucent dial are solar cells capable of converting light into energy, enabling continuous operation when exposed to natural or artificial light sources.

The movement, developed jointly with La Joux-Perret, offers impressive autonomy. The rechargeable power reserve can maintain operation for up to ten months in complete darkness, while a single minute of light exposure generates sufficient energy for an entire day of use. Even after extended inactivity, the watch can restart within seconds once exposed to light again.

Housed in a 37.5 mm stainless steel case with 10 ATM water resistance, the watch is designed as a versatile unisex sports model. The Route du Rhum edition distinguishes itself through dedicated race-inspired details, including a carbon-insert bezel, a turquoise rehaut, a matching rubber strap and a specially engraved caseback depicting the transatlantic route between Saint-Malo and Guadeloupe.

Production is limited to 513 pieces, another subtle nod to the 13th edition of the Route du Rhum.
