The dial of the Defy Revival A3648 is a masterclass in functional aesthetics. The matte black surface serves as a stark backdrop, allowing the vibrant orange accents to stand out. The minute track and hands, painted in that distinctive orange hue, provide a striking contrast against the black, ensuring that elapsed time can be read at a glance, even in murky conditions.

The hour markers are filled with white Super-LumiNova to add another layer of clarity. The choice of Super-LumiNova C1 ensures a bright, long-lasting green glow in low-light environments, enhancing the functionality of the watch as a diving instrument. The date window, positioned at 4:30, maintains a low profile, adding practicality without disrupting the overall symmetry of the dial. It’s a dial that speaks of purpose, where every element has been carefully considered for its contribution to both aesthetics and functionality.

The Elite 670: A Movement Rooted in Reliability

Beneath the dial surface, the Defy Revival A3648 houses the Elite 670 automatic manufacture movement. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz), this movement ensures smooth and reliable timekeeping. With an approximate power reserve of 50 hours, it strikes a practical balance between performance and convenience for everyday wear. The Elite movement is on the slim side, contributing to a less bulky case.

The architecture of the movement is visible through the transparent sapphire crystal caseback, offering a glimpse of the mechanics within. The oscillating weight, adorned with a “Côtes de Genève” motif, adds a touch of traditional horological finishing, a subtle nod to the heritage of the watch. While not as historically significant as the El Primero, the Elite 670 represents a solid and dependable choice, in keeping with the Defy’s reputation for robustness.

The Case: Angular Geometry and Robust Construction

The case of the Defy Revival A3648 is a defining feature, characterised by its highly angular stainless-steel construction and a  37mm diameter. This size ensures a comfortable fit on a variety of wrist sizes, while the sharp lines and facets contribute to its distinctive aesthetic. The fourteen-sided bezel, a hallmark of Defy models from the era, sits atop the round rotating bezel, adding an extra layer of visual interest and complexity.

The unidirectional rotating bezel, crafted from steel and featuring an orange-tinted sapphire crystal insert, is a crucial component for divers. Its reliable operation and clear markings allow for precise tracking of elapsed time underwater. The screw-down crown, positioned at 4 o’clock, ensures water resistance to 600 metres (60 ATM) – a remarkable achievement for a watch of this size and vintage inspiration.

The watch sits nicely on the wrist, it is a bit on the heavy side but an absolute blast from the past: joyful and inviting for adventure. I forgot to take a lume shot, and I regret it because I have tested it in low light, and I loved it…

Seeing the press release simply awakened a desire and curiosity that I often feel with these series from Zenith.
