Maison des Métiers d’Art
In 2014, Cartier inaugurated the Maison des Métiers d’Art in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland - a sanctuary dedicated to preserving and revitalising rare artisanal crafts. Nestled in a meticulously restored 17th-century farmhouse, this institution epitomises the seamless blend of tradition and innovation, establishing itself as a global benchmark in the world of watchmaking and fine craftsmanship.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtThe Foundation of a Vision

The Maison des Métiers d’Art was established to preserve vanishing artistic techniques and ensure their continuity for future generations. Cartier’s dedication to excellence and its storied legacy in both watchmaking and jewellery set the stage for creating this unique hub. Spanning 1,500 square meters, the Maison is more than a mere workshop; it serves as a crucible of creativity where artisans, engineers, and designers come together to create extraordinary works of art.

A Historic Setting

The Maison’s home, a typical Bernese farmhouse, underwent an extensive renovation under the guidance of architect Stéphane Horni and restoration expert Gilles Tissot. While preserving the original proportions, lime-coated façades, and regional wood and stone elements, the interior has been transformed into a bright, modern space tailored to the demands of precision craftsmanship. A central lightwell now floods the entire building with natural light, providing artisans with the necessary clarity to work on intricate creations.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtArtistic Crafts Revived

The Cartier Maison des Métiers d’Art serves as a haven for a wide array of artisanal crafts:

Maison des Métiers d’ArtThe Art of Fire

This category includes a variety of enamelling techniques that demonstrate the mastery of heat and colour:

  • Painted Enamel: Layers of finely ground enamel powder, applied with meticulous brushstrokes to create intricate designs, requiring multiple firings to achieve the desired hues.
  • Cloisonné Enamel: Delicate gold or silver partitions form compartments filled with enamel powder, which are kiln-fired to produce resplendent motifs.
  • Grisaille Enamel: A Renaissance-inspired method that employs white enamel on a black background to achieve dramatic contrasts and a sense of depth.
  • Plique-à-Jour Enamel: A translucent technique akin to miniature stained glass, where light passes through vibrant enamel designs.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtThe Art of Metal

This segment celebrates the enduring legacy of metalworking through techniques such as:

  • Gold Bead Granulation: Revived in 2013, this technique involves arranging tiny gold beads into intricate motifs before carefully fusing them to a base.
  • Filigree: Fine threads of gold or platinum are twisted and soldered to create lace-like openwork patterns, adapted to the compact scale of watch dials.
  • Enamel Granulation: A fusion of enamel artistry and granulation, where enamel beads are crafted and integrated into complex designs.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtThe Art of Composition

This category brings together diverse materials to create miniature masterpieces:

  • Marquetry: Techniques like straw, floral, and wood marquetry employ natural elements such as petals and straw blades, meticulously arranged to form intricate patterns.
  • Stone Mosaic: Up to 400 tesserae of semi-precious stones are used to create vivid motifs, reflecting the elegance of ancient Roman mosaics.
  • Gold and Wood Marquetry: Layers of exotic wood veneers, interspersed with 24-carat gold leaf, create shimmering, multidimensional designs.

The Art of Gem Setting

At the heart of the Maison lies the mastery of diamond setting, a meticulous craft that enhances the brilliance and elegance of Cartier’s creations. The Maison employs several techniques, including:

  • Grain Setting: Diamonds are secured using tiny beads of metal, which are raised and shaped around the gem to hold it in place. This technique allows for a seamless, glittering surface.
  • Snow Setting: Diamonds of varying sizes are densely set to create an organic, textured appearance, imitating the randomness of snow.
  • Claw (prong) Setting: This classic method involves crafting delicate prongs that securely grip the diamond while maximising light exposure to enhance its brilliance.
  • Invisible Setting: Gems are set so precisely that the underlying structure remains hidden, creating the illusion of a continuous, gleaming surface.

These techniques require unparalleled precision and skill, ensuring that each diamond is showcased to its fullest potential while maintaining Cartier’s aesthetic excellence.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtA Collaborative Ecosystem

The Maison des Métiers d’Art thrives on collaboration. It brings together specialists in enamelling, gem-setting, engraving, and metalwork to foster an environment of shared expertise. This cross-disciplinary approach has resulted in over thirty patents and numerous groundbreaking innovations, such as flamed gold, where controlled heating produces a spectrum of colours directly on gold surfaces.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtLegacy and Education

Cartier’s commitment extends beyond preservation, to education and innovation. Partnering with local schools and its own Institut Horlogerie Cartier, the Maison trains future generations of artisans, ensuring these timeless crafts endure.

Maison des Métiers d’ArtThe Maison des Métiers d’Art is more than a tribute to Cartier’s illustrious heritage. It is a testament to the enduring relevance of artisanal crafts in the modern world. By harmonising tradition with innovation, it not only preserves but elevates the artistry of watchmaking and fine jewellery, crafting timeless masterpieces that resonate with connoisseurs around the globe.

To exemplify the extraordinary work carried out at Cartier‘s Maison des Métiers d’Art, I have chosen three fabulous examples that illustrate the range of techniques employed: the Cartier Métiers d’Art Straw and Gold Marquetry Panther – launched in 2020 and one of my all-time favourite creations, the Ronde Louis Cartier Zebra and Giraffe Gold Bead Granulation and Marquetry Watch, which showcases impressive skills in working at high temperatures, and the Cartier Métiers d’Art Crocodile Jewelry where enamel and diamonds combine to create a three-dimensional masterpiece.

The highlight of this masterpiece is the breathtaking marquetry dial, where blades of natural straw and 24-carat gold leaf are meticulously assembled to bring Cartier’s iconic panther to life. Chosen for its natural sheen and durability, the straw is split, flattened, and hand-cut to precise dimensions before being arranged with astonishing precision. The interplay of the organic texture of the straw with the radiant gold creates an arresting visual effect—an enchanting blend of the rustic and the opulent.

What sets this watch apart is not just the dial, but the perfect harmony between craftsmanship and design. The gold accents enhance the panther’s regal presence, while the delicate layering of materials gives the dial an almost three-dimensional depth. Encased in 18-carat gold and paired with Cartier’s legendary craftsmanship in gem setting, this watch is as much a jewel as it is a timepiece.

The Ronde Louis Cartier Zebra and Giraffe watch is a poetic symphony of craftsmanship, where art and technique come together to tell a fascinating story. Limited to just 30 pieces, this watch celebrates contrasts: black and white meet pink and gold, realism intertwines with abstraction, and two ancient techniques, marquetry and bead granulation, blend seamlessly.

The design of the dial is nothing short of breathtaking. On one side, the zebra’s hyper-realistic profile is brought to life through masterful marquetry in mother-of-pearl and onyx. The precision with which Cartier’s artisans have rendered every detail of the zebra’s coat is awe-inspiring and demonstrates the Maison’s unparalleled expertise in naturalistic artistry.

On the other side, the giraffe’s coat is reinterpreted as an abstract motif, using an innovative bead granulation technique. For the first time, Cartier introduces a gradation of rose and yellow gold, crafted from six different gold alloys, to create a rich, textured palette that evokes the giraffe’s distinctive spots. Seven collet-set diamonds further enhance the artistry of the piece, adding brilliance to the intricate gold grid.

The bezel is a masterpiece in itself, combining a selection of diamonds, sapphires, and garnets, while the inverted pavilion diamond on the crown adds a final touch of elegance. The black lacquer detailing on the zebra’s coat provides depth and contrast, further enhancing the dual narrative of the dial.
